One of the best features in Vista is undoubtedly the indexing and search feature. Click Start - type in the keyword - Enter and Vista automatically find what you want. This makes it possible to be much more productive. Instead of searching through the start menu, a cluttered desktop, gigabytes of music or a massive amount of documents, you just repeat those steps. Start - keyword - enter.
However, what if you don’t have Vista yet? Or maybe you want to try out a different style of program. Well, application launchers are the answer.
Program Launchers work very similar to Vista’s search feature. You click a hotkey (like the semicolon) type the keyword and find exactly what you are looking for.
There are many free program launchers available for download. So instead of me recommending one to you and claiming that it’s the best one out, I will list a choice of a few of the widely acclaimed ones - Launchy, Colibri and Keybreeze. To see which one is the most suitable for you, check out the features and screen shots. Check out their features here - Launchy, Colibri, Keybreeze - and see which is most suitable for you.
Things to look out for:
You want to be able to choose which folders to index and which not to.
Check out the different keywords to use. Easy access to to-do lists, weather, movies and such is very handy.
Look at which interface is the best for you. Although this might not be your top priority, it’s good to have a fitting interface. In fact, check out the different skins for each program.
After playing around with the program launcher you use, it will make the desktop, start menu, documents, Internet favorites, and pretty much any shortcut to personal folders obsolete. Just type the keyword and you’re there.
